Being good at what you do translates to being successful. Being a successful real estate agent involves several key elements that are consistent throughout random surveys of top producing agents around the country. The survey responses are from brokers and sales managers of real estate firms, and clients and customers serviced by real estate agents.

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowing your product is critical to being an effective salesperson in any business. In real estate you need to know the geographic and demographic information in the areas you service; the school districts and municipal ordinances; statistics on current listings, pending sales and solds in your market areas; a good knowledge of financing and mortgage sources; knowledge of architectural styles and construction terminology; a clear understanding of all the contracts and forms necessary in any given transaction; and, most recently, the ability to work with computers and fax machines to facilitate the process. Clients and customers are much more informed today in all these areas, so good real estate agents need to be even more proficient in their work.

INTEGRITY:
As important as knowledge, to be a good agent you must have integrity. If people don't trust you, all the knowledge in the world won't help you. Clients and customers know when a sales agent is looking for a quick sale and a commission check. Looking out for the best interest of the client or customer is apparent in the time an agent takes to fully explain all the options available to them throughout the whole process of selling or buying a property. An agent cannot assume that clients and customers know everything about a real estate transaction.

EXPERIENCE:
The top producers in this industry are agents who have earned it through experience. As in any business the more often you do something, and do it right, the more knowledge you have to build on. Clients and customers instantly respect an agent who can respond readily to their needs and wants. Typically, it takes a minimum of three years for a new agent to feel experienced and confident in their work. Those who are willing to go through the learning curve will be successful agents.

HONESTY:
This follows closely with integrity and is mandatory for repeat business, which is the name of the game. Dishonesty spreads through the industry and the community faster than good deeds.
